Mountains Over Beaches

Welcome to another installment of my “about me” series. Today I want to talk about something in regards to location and my preferences. As you may or may not know, I live in Central Florida, about 30 minutes away from Walt Disney World in one direction and about 40 minutes or so from a beach in another. For some, this location would be jolly good, making for great day trips. And, that person would be right. That’s why I am a big Disney fan, but if I had my druthers, I would live closer to the mountains than I do the beach.

I was not born in Florida, but have lived here most of my life. And yes, I do enjoy going to the beach, but we used to vacation in the mountains. To be specific we would camp at Cades Cove, or Elkmont campgrounds. That is where I truly feel at peace, sitting next to a babbling mountain stream, alone with my thoughts and the sound of the gently moving water. I have continued this tradition with my own family, making semi-regular trips to the mountains, although we do more hotel than camping at this point, we did at one time also camp at places like Elkmont.

I rarely if ever go to the beach for many reasons.  Firstly, I think the beaches in the early morning or early evening can be stunning. But in the middle of the day, they often become crowded and the heat is just too much to stand. I have never understood the idea of sunbathing, even as a kid. Even before my grandfather died of skin cancer, I hated being in direct sunlight.

Secondly, most of the beaches near me are not the turquoise blue water you see in the travel brochure. They just don’t have that island feel unless you go someplace on the gulf coast or closer to the southern tip of the state.

Thirdly, I surfed a little during one summer as a kid, but outside of that, I don’t particularly enjoy going out into the salty water. I supposed for Snorkeling, or my eventual diving certification I would be okay with it, but the over all experience and effort to actually go swimming at the beach is just not worth it to me.

All this leads me to often say that I am certainly in the wrong state, and while I love many things about Florida, for me it is a great place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.
